Removable tint vs. permanent tint vs. sun shades
Three ways to deal with glare through a side window. They solve different problems, so here’s how they compare and when each one makes sense.
| TempTint | Permanent tint | Sun shades | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it covers | The part of the driver window you look through to see your side mirror. 6″ × 8.25″, 2 per pack. | Whole windows. | Most of a window opening. |
| Cost | $19.99 CAD for 2 | Around $350–500 for a full car at a tint shop | Around $60–115 for a set of side-window shades |
| Putting it on | Place it on the inside of the window and press. No tools. | A shop appointment, then several days before you can roll the windows down. | Clips, suction cups or a sleeve over the door frame. |
| Taking it off | Peel it off. No residue. Reuse it as often as you like. | A removal job, usually at a shop. | Unclip or pull off. |
| Rules in Ontario | For temporary use. Never on the windshield, and use only where permitted by law. | On vehicles made from 2017, front side windows must let through at least 70% of light. Darker film fails. | Usually for rear windows or a parked car, since they block the view out. |
| Best for | Headlight glare in the side mirror; shared, leased or new cars you don’t want to alter. | Heat and privacy on rear windows, for good. | Shading passengers, kids and pets in the back. |
When permanent tint makes sense
If you want the whole car cooler and more private for years, a professional tint job is the better tool. It covers every rear window, blocks heat as well as glare, and you never think about it again. The trade-offs are the cost, the wait while it cures, and that it stays on the car whether you want it or not.
When sun shades make sense
Mesh and roller shades are made for passengers: keeping sun off a child’s car seat or a sleeping dog. Because they cover most of the window, they’re not something to drive with on the driver’s side.
When TempTint makes sense
TempTint does one job: it softens the glare reflected in your side mirror, from low sun by day or bright headlights at night. It covers only that patch of window, goes on in seconds, and comes off without a trace, so it suits leased cars, shared cars and anyone who doesn’t want anything permanent on the glass.
